Mediterranean Moray Eel or Morena pintada,Fuerteventura Nature
The Mediterranean Moray Eel (Muraena helena) known locally in Fuerteventura as Morena pintada is common in Fuerteventura waters.
Their colour varies from dark grey to dark brown with fine dark spots, they have slimy skin without scales and dorsal fin begins behind the head and continues to the caudal fin.
Mediterranean Moray can reach a length of 1.5 meters and weigh over 15 kilograms. Equipped with long and sharp pointed teeth they are opportunistic, ferocious predators.
They inhabit depths from a couple of metres down to 800 metres feeding primarily on smaller fish, octopus, squid, and crustaceans.
Care should be taken when handling the Mediterranean moray whose bite can be dangerous mainly due to the mildly toxic slime on its skin.
