The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) locally knows as pulpo are very common around the coast of Fuerteventura. They grow up to 25 cm in length with eight tentacles up to a metre long each with two rows of suckers. During the day they usually hide themselves crevices blocking the entrance with stones and shells. Hunting at dusk, crabs, crayfish, and two-shelled molluscs are preferred, although the octopus will eat almost anything it can catch. It is able to change...

La Alcogida Ecomuseum

To visit La Alcogida is to experience the way of life of Fuerteventuran peasants over the last few decades. Stone houses, whitewashed and with gabled roofs, welcome the visitor to the La Alcogida Eco-Museum, located in the village of Tefía in Puerto del Rosario. Its roofs are made of “torta” (a mix of water, earth and straw) which, with the advent of winter rains, is what gives the walls their ancient appearance. In summer the walls are repainted to once again display their pure and perfect white.

The Del Carmen Saltworks Museum is located in the Del Carmen Saltworks at Las Salinas, Fuerteventura.

The only saltworks in Fuerteventura still in operation, comprised of 10 intake ponds, nearly 1000 condensation ponds, the salt warehouse, the salt worker’s house and  the remains of the old quay.
