Purple Sea Urchin,Fuerteventura Nature
Purple Sea Urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) can be seen around the coast of Fuerteventura in rock pools and in shallow waters on rocky shores at depths down to 20 metres.
The spines that are usually purple but are occasionally other colours including dark brown, light brown and olive green. They reach a maximum diameter of 7 centimetres and their spines are up to 3 centimetres in length.
Sea urchins should not be handled, and you should avoid standing on them when in the water. Their stings can be extremely painful and the spines that a sting can leave behind can be difficult to remove from the skin.
