Spiny Starfish,Fuerteventura Nature
Spiny Starfish (Marthasterias glacialis) can be seen in rock pools and when snorkelling and scuba diving around the coast of Fuerteventura.
This fairly large starfish has a small central disc and five slender, tapering arms grows up to 70 centimetres across however they are commonly 25 to 30 centimetres.
Their background colour is variable and may be brownish or greenish-grey, tinged with yellow or red and sometimes with purple at the tips of the arms. If an arm is lost to a predator they can grow a replacement.
