Atlantic Horse Mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) known locally in Fuerteventura as Chicharro can be found in Fuerteventura waters.
They congregate in large schools and feed on crustaceans, squid, and other fish. They get their name from a legend that other smaller species of fish could ride on their backs over great distances.
Atlantic Horse Mackerel are edible and are often smoked, fried, salted, or baked.
