White Seabream or Sargo,Fuerteventura Nature
White Seabream (Diplodus sargus) locally known as Sargo are very common around Fuerteventura, they inhabit the surf zone, and can often be seen when snorkeling in shallow water, close to the shore.
Their diet consists of small crustaceans, mollusks, seaweed and coral, using their strong jaws to crush shells. They can reach 45 cm in length, but average 22 cm. They can be caught from beaches or rocks using pieces of prawn for bait, and the larger ones are great fun to catch on light tackle freelining a whole prawn.
White Seabream are very good to eat, and can often be found at the fish counter in the local supermarkets, they are easily identified by the vertical dark stripes, and the black spot near the tail.
