Madeira Rockfish,Fuerteventura Nature
Madeira Rockfish (Scorpaena maderensis) are found in Fuerteventura waters and are the most abundant Rockfish/Scorpionfish in the region.
They mostly inhabit depths of between 5 and 40 metres and are usually caught when bottom fishing using fish or squid for bait, small Rockfish are often found in rock pools.
They reach a maximum size of around about 14 centimetres in length and are colourful shades of reds, oranges and browns with white blotches. They are masters of camouflage, enabling them to lie in wait for their victims to come close, before lunging forward at great speed and inhaling their prey with their large mouths. They are easily identified from the other rockfish/scorpionfosh as they have white growths on their chin.
They are dangerous and poisonous with venomous spines along their backs as well as in anal and pectoral fins, they use this for defence, the venom gland is covered with a fine skin that breaks to release the poison.
Care should be taken when handling or unhooking these.
