Pied Flycatcher,Fuerteventura Nature
The Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) also known as Eurasian Pied Flycatchercan be seen on Fuerteventura. This small bird is up to 13 centimetres in length with a wingspan of up to 24 centimetres.
The breeding male is mainly black above and white below, with a large white wing patch, white tail sides and a small forehead patch. Non-breeding males, females and juveniles are pale brown instead of black. Their legs are short and brown, and their bill is black broad and pointed.
These aerial insectivores can often be seen hunting from perches, flying to catch flying insects passing by and often returning to the same perch, they also feed on spiders, ants, bees, caterpillars, seeds and berries.
