Atlantic Bluefin Tuna,Fuerteventura Nature
Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are found in Fuerteventura waters towards the end of each year and are highly sought after by sport fishermen.
The body of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is rhomboidal in profile, the head is conical with a large mouth. They are dark blue on top and grey below with a gold glistening the body with bright yellow caudal fins and can be distinguished from other family members by their relatively short pectoral fins.
Fully mature adult specimens average 2000 to 2500 centimetres in length and weigh between 225 and 250 kilograms and they possesses enormous muscular strength.
The Atlantic bluefin tuna typically hunts small fish such as sardines, herring, and mackerel, and invertebrates such as squid and crustaceans diving to depths of 500 metres and reaching speeds of 64 Kilometres per hour.
