Location:  Betancuria   Betancuria

This museum has two exhibition halls equipped with explanatory panels, one for Aboriginal material culture and the other to the spiritual world, both exhibit some archaeological pieces belonging to the Aboriginal stage of the island. The museum began with the donation by old Fuerteventurans of various pieces found by accident in the fields. Vicente Ruiz, a resident of Betancuria, was the one commissioned to gather and organise the material.

After crossing the threshold, visitors will receive information about the paleontological wealth of the Island. Photographs and models of aboriginal inhabitants, ceramic remains, tools made from bone or molluscs all help us to discover the life of Fuerteventurans in years gone by. Without forgetting the religious idols made from stone and the information about Tindaya and its podomorphs as centre of the magical-religious world of the ancient Fuerteventurans. Panels and illustrations invite the young and old to read quietly, and thereby discover what the old Fuerteventurans used to eat, their techniques for pasturelands and fishing or how they managed to obtain much-prized water.

Opening hours : Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10:00 to 18:00 (Closed Sundays and Mondays)

Betancuria Archaeological Museum is located in Betancuria, Fuerteventura.

Betancuria is the old capital of the island which in the past was governed from there. Hidden in a valley to prevent pirate attacks from the African continent this picturesque colonial town offers a glimpse into Fuerteventura’s past.

Betancuria was founded in 1404 during the conquest led by the Norman, Jean de Béthencourt.

This wonderful museum has many good points but it's NOT good if you are elderly or have mobility issues. You would need to take your own folding seat or wheelchair.
There is NO SEATING available. You must take your own drink (not even a machine has been installed) and no water is sold in any way.  Fortunately there are many cafes available within a few minutes walk.
The audio visuals offer NO ENGLISH! Plenty of English on the wall mounted information thankfully. A museum needing to be more inclusive to be successful.

Pros and Cons

Pros
Modern museum with great artefacts. Has a lift you upper floors.
Cons
No drinks available (not even a machine). Worst criticism is NO SEATING on any floor. If you need to sit there is one bench by the lift. Nothing in the museum areas. We asked and a kind staff member brought 2 chairs to the top floor. Chairs or benches are much needed throughout this building otherwise it is not disabled friendly. A pity because staff are friendly and the artefacts are we worth seeing.
