Miguel de Unamuno House Museum

Miguel de Unamuno House Museum

The Miguel de Unamuno House Museum, in the heart of the old Puerto de Cabras, commemorates the passage of the famous writer through Fuerteventura. It is a house from the 19th century which, in other times, served as a guesthouse under the name of Hotel Fuerteventura. The first owner of which was Juana Ocampo y Manrique, from Tetir. From there came some of the first settlers of Puerto de Cabras, encouraged by an increase in the trade of salsola or saltwort, and some Europeans such as Diego Miller, responsible for the first urban layout of the town.

The building recreates a home from the nineteen twenties, a house similar to that which Unamuno occupied between March and July of 1924. Period furniture such as the desk given to him by his Fuerteventuran friend Ramón Castañeyra Schamann and upon which he could have written some sonnets from his exile diary De Fuerteventura a París (From Fuerteventura to Paris) or a rocking chair in which he sat to read the press which, days late, would arrive in Fuerteventura and through which he followed the political situation on the Peninsula at that time.
