Canarian Scorpionfish,Fuerteventura Nature
The small but deadly Canarian Scorpionfish (Scorpaena canariensis) also known as Goblinfish or Stingfish are found in Fuerteventura waters.
They inhabit depths down to 120 metres and are sometimes caught when bottom fishing using fish or squid for bait.
They reach a maximum size of around about 14 cm in length and are colourful shades of reds, they are masters of camouflage, enabling them to lie in wait for their victims to come close, before lunging forward and inhaling their prey with their large mouths.
They are dangerous and poisonous with venomous spines along their back and their anterior fins which when disturbed they raise for protection.
Care should be taken when handling or unhooking Scorpionfish, often when these are caught on fishing trips the crew becomes very excited and loud as they explain not to bring the fish on the boat.
