Red Scorpionfish,Fuerteventura Nature
Red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) also known as Bigscale Scorpionfish, Largescaled Scorpionfish, Orange Scorpionfish or Whiskery Scorpionfish are found in Fuerteventura waters.
They inhabit depths down to 500 metres and are sometimes caught when bottom fishing using fish or squid for bait.
They reach a maximum size of around about 50 cm in length and are colourful shades of reds, they are masters of camouflage, enabling them to lie in wait for their victims to come close, before lunging forward and inhaling their prey with their large mouths.
They are dangerous and poisonous with venomous spines along their back and their anterior fins which when disturbed they raise for protection.
Care should be taken when handling or unhooking Scorpionfish.
