Comber or Cabrilla,Fuerteventura Nature
Comber (Serranus cabrilla) known locally in Fuerteventura as Cabrilla or Cabrilla rubia are common in Fuerteventura waters.
Cabrilla have a light body colour with two brown horizontal stripes, one of which runs through the eyes which are slightly protruding and bright vertical strips from the head to the tail fin.
Typically they are between 5 and 25 centimetres in length but do reach up to 40 centimetres.
Comber are usually solitary or in small groups and feed on other fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. They are known to give away hidden octopus nests since they lie in waiting outside to feed on the left over bits of shellfish.
Cabrilla are good to eat and poular among local residents who pan fry or grill them.
