Black Moray Eel or Morena negra,Fuerteventura Nature
The Black Moray Eel (Muraena augusti) known locally in Fuerteventura as Morena negra is common in Fuerteventura waters.
Black Moray are similar in appearance to the Mediterranean Moray but a darker brownish black, dotted with numerous black spots, white polka dots and intensely white eyes. They have slimy skin without scales and dorsal fin begins behind the head and continues to the caudal fin.
They can reach a length of 90 centimetres and weigh over 15 kilograms. Equipped with long and sharp pointed teeth they are opportunistic, ferocious predators.
They inhabit depths from a couple of metres down to 250 metres feeding primarily on smaller fish, octopus, squid, and crustaceans.
Care should be taken when handling moray eels whose bite can be dangerous due to their very sharp teeth.
