The Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus) known locally in Fuerteventura as Tuna are found in Fuerteventura waters.
Bigeye Tuna have streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies adapted to fast and continuous swimming with dark metallic blue on their backs and upper sides, and are nearly white on their lower sides and belly.
They inhabit depths between 300-500 metres during the day periodically returning to shallower, warmer waters to re-warm. and can grow to a length of 250 centimetres and exceed 150 kg in weight.
The reddish-pink meat of the bigeye is prized by sashimi lovers.
