The Fuerteventura Lockdown situation is beginning to unfold, the 15 day State of Alarm started at midnight on Saturday March 14th but it seems very likely that it will continue well past the 15 days as the virus spreads.
As the situation continues it is now clear that bars, cafes, restaurants, shops (excluding food shops) and public spaces including beaches have been closed. We are getting reports that take away food is available from some restaurants and cafes with their seating areas closed off and pharmacies and petrol stations remain open.
People are allowed to leave their accommodation to buy food and essentials, visit a pharmacy, a cash machine, or to seek medical treatment as long as they remain at least one meter apart from others.
If someone needs help, either because they considered vulnerable, elderly or disabled you are allowed to visit them and take them supplies.
It appears that taking rubbish to the bins is allowed and walking dogs as long as there is no more than one person per dog and people remain at least one meter apart from others.
Only those with valid reason can take to the roads by car and passengers are forbidden. Bus services may have been reduced and as long as your reason for being outside your accommodation falls under the rules and you remain at least one meter apart from other travellers you can travel by bus.
In the small shops we have reports that one person at a time is allowed to enter and must remain at least one meter apart from others including staff and those queuing outside.
We have unconfirmed reports of fines being imposed and arrests of those breaking the rules and expect the enforcement to become more strict as the authorities react to the situation especially as people become stir crazy over the coming days and weeks.
The message from the authorities is clear, to reduce the spread of the virus you need to isolate yourself from others and stay in your accommodation.
