For centuries Fuerteventura was the granary of the Canary Islands. Grain left its ports to supply other islands. Today this past is remembered in the Casa de la Cilla, in La Oliva, a place not to missed by those interested in finding out about the backbone of the Fuerteventuran economy until a few decades ago.
In Fuerteventura “cillas” were created in Betancuria, Tindaya, Tetir, Tiscamanita and La Oliva. The purpose of these warehouses was to safeguard the Church’s crops and produce, either those obtained from their own livestock and lands or those that were due by way of tithes.

The viewpoint of Morro Velosa is located in the Parque Rural de Betancuria, on top of the homonymous mountain, between Betancuria and Valle de Santa Inés. It was designed by the artist from Lanzarote Cesar Manrique and from its facilities you can see a wide panoramic view of the landscape of plains and volcanoes.

To visit La Alcogida is to experience the way of life of Fuerteventuran peasants over the last few decades. Stone houses, whitewashed and with gabled roofs, welcome the visitor to the La Alcogida Eco-Museum, located in the village of Tefía in Puerto del Rosario. Its roofs are made of “torta” (a mix of water, earth and straw) which, with the advent of winter rains, is what gives the walls their ancient appearance. In summer the walls are repainted to once again display their pure and perfect white.
