The Barbary squirrel was introduced to the island of Fuerteventura in 1965. The squirrel burrows in bushy rocky areas and grassland. They are colonial animals and live in family groups. They come out to feed early mornings and evenings. The Barbary squirrel can give birth to a litter of up to four twice a year. The Barbary squirrels are often very tame, especially in the main tourist areas and will often feed from your hand.
