The gastronomy of Fuerteventura is known for its authenticity. Many of the ingredients are native to the island such as the Queso Majorero. This is Fuerteventura’s famous award winning goats’ cheese, it is important to the economy, and has won a number of prizes in a variety of competitions. Since 1996 it has had denominación de origen (designation of origin – DO.) It is smooth, rich, and creamy; a favourite of both natives and visitors. Incidentally, the term Majorero refers to that which is native to Fuerteventura, this includes the people, natives are commonly referred to as Majoreros, and you will frequently come across this word during your stay on the island. Carajacas is a dish for the liver lovers, even non liver lovers could be converted. Popular in Fuerteventura with locals and tourists. After the liver fillets have been marinaded in garlic, olive oil, peppers, oregano, parsley and cumin they are then cooked for a few minutes. A well worth have a try recipe.

Carne Fiesta, a pork dish is well loved in Fuerteventura especially at fiesta times. Chunks of pork are marinaded in a variety of herbs and spices such as garlic, oregano, thyme and chillies. Once fried the aroma is tantalizing and the flavours equally so.

Chopitos, not to be confused with shots of alcohol Chopitos are also known as Puntillas. These are small squid and as such are not rubbery which bigger squid sometimes can be. Coated and and fried these squid are a popular dish around Fuerteventura.

Churros de pescado

This dish is basically locally caught fish from Fuerteventura waters fried in a batter traditionally served with alioli (garlic mayonaise). This is a very light dish and some places may add herbs or spices to add a little oomph!

Croquetas Caseras

Croquetas Caseras are fried croquettes which are often served in Fuerteventura. They come with a variety of fillings including fish, chicken. spinach, and ham, which are mixed with potatoes rolled in bread crumbs and then fried. Sometimes the ingredients are not balanced as too much potato can be used and you lose the flavours of the other ingredients. Order Croquetas Caseras and not just Croquetas then you are more lightly to experience them home made.

Papas Arrugardas

Papas Arrugardas is a very popular potato dish found all over Fuerteventura. The small wrinkly potatoes originally cooked in sea water, and still are in some places, are served with a mojo sauce. This is a lightly spiced red or green sauce made with olive oil, garlic. chilli and roasted red or green peppers. Delicious as a starter or as a side dish.
